Join NEXZ AI Lab

We welcome prospective Ph.D. and master’s students, research assistants, research interns, and postdoctoral researchers interested in healthcare AI.

Finding the right group is a mutual choice. Alongside shared research interests, I value open communication, trust, and a willingness to learn. You do not need to have every skill from the start; curiosity, commitment, and room to grow matter.

Research Interests

We develop AI that understands medical information, models disease and treatment, and continues to improve in changing clinical environments. Our interests include:

  • Medical multimodal learning, foundation models, and agents: Connecting medical images, text, physiological signals, and clinical information to support understanding, reasoning, and tool use, with attention to reliability, uncertainty, and safety.
  • Medical world models and physiological modeling: Combining longitudinal data and physiological mechanisms to predict and simulate disease progression and treatment response.
  • Continual learning and self-improving AI: Learning new knowledge while retaining existing capabilities, adapting to distribution shifts, and exploring recursive self-improvement through reliable feedback and evaluation.
  • Clinical applications: Working with clinicians on stroke, glioma, radiotherapy, and related problems in detection, monitoring, response prediction, and decision support.

We care about meaningful questions and convincing evidence. A medical background is not required, but a willingness to understand clinical needs and work across disciplines is important.

Who I Look For

  • Curiosity and independent thinking: Be thoughtful about why you want to do research and what you hope to explore. As AI tools make implementation easier, asking why a problem matters and what a result teaches us becomes increasingly valuable.
  • Initiative and ownership: Take steps to move your work forward, share progress honestly, and ask for help when needed. Slow progress and unsuccessful experiments are normal; you never need to wait for a positive result to start a discussion. I hope you will bring a sincere interest in research and take responsibility for your growth.
  • Clear communication: Be willing to practice writing, presenting, listening, and discussing. Different perspectives and thoughtful disagreement are welcome.
  • Technical foundations: Have, or be willing to build, a foundation in machine learning and programming. AI coding tools are encouraged, alongside understanding and checking your code. We value open-source work, clear documentation, and reproducible experiments.
  • Reliability and integrity: Report results accurately, respect collaborators and data requirements, and communicate early when plans change.
  • A life beyond research: Enjoy discovery, keep your hobbies, and make time to understand yourself. Work smart, play hard. I hope you grow academically while finding a way of life that suits you.

My Support

  • Guidance and feedback: Support throughout the research process, with closer guidance early on, clear expectations, and regular discussions.
  • Freedom to grow: I aim to mentor future collaborators. As you gain experience, I hope you will lead projects, develop your own expertise, challenge my ideas, and eventually teach me something new.
  • Collaborative mentorship: I work with researchers across universities, research institutions, and clinical teams. Where possible, I will involve an additional close collaborator to offer complementary expertise and help you build your own network.
  • Internships and joint training: I support relevant research internships, international visits, and joint training, including exploring formal dual-degree opportunities with institutions such as The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), where available.
  • Academic and career development: Support for conference participation, sharing your work, developing collaborations, and planning your next steps around your interests and goals.

Postdoctoral Opportunities

We also welcome applicants who hold or are nearing completion of a relevant Ph.D., with demonstrated research ability and a collaborative mindset. We can shape projects around shared interests while supporting your independent research, grant applications, and academic development.

I will support eligible applicants in applying for national and Shanghai postdoctoral funding, including the Postdoctoral Innovative Talent Support Program and Shanghai’s “Super Postdoctoral” program. Please contact me to discuss compensation and support; funding is subject to current policies and competitive selection.

How to Apply

Please include:

  • CV: Education, research or project experience, and relevant achievements.
  • Position and availability: Your intended role, preferred start date, and expected duration.
  • Research interests: What interests you, what you would like to explore, and any initial attempts.
  • Representative work: A proposal, paper, code, or project report, with your own contributions clearly explained.

Publications are welcome but are not expected from everyone, particularly undergraduate and overseas MSc applicants. I value potential, thoughtful engagement, and commitment. I have mentored students who started without research experience and later coauthored work at ICLR, MICCAI, and Medical Image Analysis.

For a follow-up conversation, please prepare a short introduction and a presentation of your previous work or initial research ideas: what you did, why you did it, and what you would like to explore next. A polished proposal is not necessary.

Where suitable, a research internship can help us get to know each other’s interests and working styles before making a longer-term commitment.
